Club's Rugby History:
Gulargambone Rugby Union Club was founded in 1980, with one team in the Western Plains Second Grade Competition. The club draws on players from neighbouring Gilgandra, and the villages of Armatree, Curban and Tooraweenah. Over the last 28 years the club numbers have fluctuated, with the club boasting 3 senior grades in the 1990's, which is a fair effort for a township of less than 1000 people. While numbers have been a bit lean in recent years, the Gulars are pleased to say that it is expected that 2008 will see 2 Senior grades formed. The club enjoys all aspects of Bush Rugby, in particular the bus trips; which are regularly more than 3 or 4 hours each way (Always longer coming home).
Club personalities/characters:
Former Wallaby, Warwick Waugh is the clubs biggest claim to fame, and it has many other players of note within the current and past ranks. Ian 'Cyril' Dent was recently presented with a Lifetime Rugby Award. Cyril has devoted more than 30 seasons to the club (the last 3 with only one thumb!!), and was still playing in the front row last year for the for XV. Cyril has vowed to his wife that as he is turning 50 this year, he will only commit to Second Grade. Several of the club characters reveal some insights into the Club on the recently produced "Gular Rugby - The DVD". Copies of the DVD can be purchased by emailing gularrugby@tpg.com.au requesting further information.
2008 Club Goals:
The clubs aspirations for 2008 are to make the Finals Series. The club has not been at the top of the ladder for the past few years, and is looking to get back up there. The club will still ensure that all members enjoy themselves - Win, Lose or Draw.
Club Role Models:
Mark Walker is a Club Stalwart that many of the younger players look up to. He started on the bench for the "Thirsty Thirds" in 1990. Since then he has worked his way through the ranks to being a pivotal player in the First XV in recent years. Although now retired, he is contemplating a return to seconds (Pending marital approval)
Past Country Coach Greg Hotron coached the Gulars in the Mid 90's, and his influence had a positive effect on the Club, taking the First XV to 3 Grand Finals.
Angus Beveridge is a Past Player of note; playing every position on the paddock - and loving it.
