Portugal has upstaged Australia on the first day of the penultimate iRB Sevens World Series tournament in London on Saturday.
The Aussies were expected to have little trouble in their opening encounter in Pool C, but three second-half tries gave the Portuguese an unlikely, 28-12, victory.
Stunned from their opening loss coach Bill Millard’s team came storming back against Canada in their second Pool Match to win 38-5.
After Portugal defeated Canada in their final Pool match the Australians had to secure victory against tournament third seed Fiji to have any hope of progressing to the Cup quarter finals on Sunday.
The Fijians raced out to a 12-0 lead but tries from Queensland Red Scott Higginbotham and captain Shawn MacKay brought them to within two points, 12-10, at the death as Andrew Walker's touchline conversion drifted across the posts.
Australia will now play Kenya in the Bowl Quarter Final on Sunday.
