A utility forward with a high work rate and a big future, DEAN MUMM used his maiden Qantas Wallabies campaign in 2008 to confirm the promise that had him ear-marked as a future international even prior to his Investec Super 14 debut with the Waratahs in 2007. After featuring in 12 of the ‘Tahs 13 matches during his maiden campaign, the Sydney University forward missed out on just two matches in his second season as the Waratahs made their way to the final against the Crusaders in Christchurch. Selection for the Qantas Wallabies followed, with Mumm making a brief appearance off the bench as a blood bin replacement against Ireland, to earn his first cap. His first Test start followed three weeks later, in the second international against France at Brisbane. Mumm then played a leading hand as a first half replacement for Daniel Vickerman in the Wallabies’ first win on South African soil for eight years, at Durban during the Tri-Nations.

The lanky New Zealand-born forward show cased his even handed temperament on that occasion as he hadn’t even been an original selection for that game, and only found out he would be involved on match morning, after food poisoning struck down Hugh McMeniman. Mumm rounded out a hugely satisfying year when he joined Luke Burgess and Mark Chisholm as the only players to appear in all six matches on the Wallabies Spring Tour.
