Now firmly established as a first choice selection in the Australian front row, BENN ROBINSON was one of just two Wallaby forwards to start all nine domestic Tests in 2008. He then started three of the five Tests on that year’s Spring Tour. This represented a big step up in the 24-year-old’s work-load, given that three of his previous six Test caps had been earned as a replacement coming off the bench. It’s not coincidental that Robinson’s rise in prominence has come at a time of positive development from the Wallaby front row, as he had previously proved his worth as the cornerstone of a Waratahs scrum that was seldom bettered en-route to the final of the 2008 Investec Super 14. Popular away from the field, where his sense of humour has seen him ‘star’ in numerous off field video clips on www.rugby.com.au; Robinson answers to the nickname ‘Cat’, because of a perceived likeness to the former Australian Test cricketer Greg Ritchie.
Represented Australian Schools against New Zealand in Wellington.
Appeared for the New South Wales Under 19s team.
Toured Argentina with the Waratahs making his senior debut against Salta.
Played in every minute of every game at the IRB Under 21 World Championships in Argentina whilst on a Development Contract with the Waratahs
Made his Super 14 debut as a replacement in the opening week of the competition and then started at loosehead prop for the Waratahs in four consecutive matches. Robinson played all 14 games for the Waratahs before being included as the youngest member of the Wallabies squad for the Domestic Series and Tri Nations. His Test debut came in the starting lineup against South Africa in Johannesburg.
Played all 13 Super rugby matches for the Waratahs, starting at loosehead prop in 11 games. Made three appearances for the Wallabies, but a foot injury during the Australian Rugby Championship ended his 2007 season.
Cemented his position as Australia’s first choice loosehead prop, starting all nine domestic Tests, scoring his first Test try in South Africa, and then featuring in three of the five Spring Tour Tests. This all came after he had featured 12 times for the Waratahs as they made a second Investec Super rugby final.
