An exciting talent in the making, LACHIE TURNER showed a glimpse of what international opponents have in store when he scored two tries for the Waratahs against the Robbie Deans-coached Crusaders during the 2008 Investec Super 14 final. Turner’s timing was exquisite: while the Waratahs lost the game, Deans took notes, and named the young Waratah in his maiden Wallaby Test side two days later. Turner’s elevation to the Wallabies came just over 18 months after his introduction into the professional ranks, which he marked by taking out the 2007 Australian Super Rugby Rookie of the Year award. This year’s selection for the Wallabies followed a steady progression through the Australian age-group ranks, with Turner appearing for the Australian Schools in 2004 and 2005 while he attended Newington College.
He then shared in Australia’s title at the 2006 Under-19 World Cup, before featuring for Australia A in 2007 and again this year. After debuting against France at Brisbane during the Bundaberg Rum Rugby Series, Turner gained his second cap on the Spring Tour, marking the occasion with a try during the Test win over Italy at Padova. Turner appeared twice on the tour and was a try-scorer on both occasions, gaining his second to seal the Wallabies win over the Barbarians at Wembley, after he was injected into that match as a replacement.
2004 First represents Australian Schools
2005 Joins a select group who have appeared for Australian Schools in successive seasons.
2006 Plays his part as Australia wins the IRB Under-19 World Cup in Dubai. Ends the year touring the United Kingdom and Ireland with the Waratahs Development squad.
2007 Makes his Investec Super rugby debut for the Waratahs against the Stormers. Winds up featuring in eight matches, and scoring three tries. Is named the Australian Super 14 Rookie of the Year at tournament’s end. Is then a member of the Australia A squad for Pacific Nations Cup tournament.
2008 Completes his second Super 14 by scoring two tries in the final. This is followed, two days later, by a first selection in the Wallabies squad, with his Test debut coming a month later when he starts on the wing during the 40-10 win over France at Brisbane. Later scored tries during the Spring Tour wins over Italy and the Barbarians.
